Ingredients

For the Fizzing Lava Rocks
  • 1 cup baking soda Essential for the fizzing reaction.
  • 1/2 cup citric acid Provides the sour taste and fizz.
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup Adds sweetness and binds the mixture.
  • 1/4 cup water Helps combine the dry ingredients.
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil Keeps the mixture moist.
Optional Ingredients
  • 1 teaspoon essential oils For scent.
  • food coloring For visual appeal.

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Separate Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper

Method

  1. Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking soda and citric acid. Mix well until evenly combined.
  2. Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix together the corn syrup, water, vegetable oil, and food coloring (if using). If you want to add scent, include the essential oils as well.
  3. Step 3: Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, stirring continuously. The mixture will fizz initially due to the reaction of baking soda and citric acid.
  4. Step 4: Once the mixture is combined and has a thick consistency, use your hands to form small rock-like shapes. Alternatively, you can scoop them into silicone molds for a more uniform appearance.
  5. Step 5: Place the formed lava rocks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow them to dry for 24-48 hours until they harden.
  6. Step 6: Once fully dry, store your fizzing lava rocks in an airtight container. To use, simply drop one into a bowl of water and watch it fizz and bubble!

Notes

Ensure all dry ingredients are mixed thoroughly to avoid clumps. Experiment with different color combinations to create visually stunning rocks.
