Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joes
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey either works great, depending on your preference
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp mustard
For Serving
  • 4 slices thick-cut bread like Texas toast
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • fresh parsley chopped, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven

Method

  1. Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, stirring occasionally, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Step 2: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Step 3: Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Step 4: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the slices of bread on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 5 minutes or until lightly golden.
  5. Step 5: Remove the toasted bread from the oven. Spoon the meat mixture generously over each slice of toast.
  6. Step 6: Top each open-faced Sloppy Joe with shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Step 7: Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Step 8: Remove from the oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley, and serve immediately.
